What’s in a Name: Becoming Futurkind
Introduction
I grew up with a dad who was an avid comic book collector — the kind with boxes of carefully first editions in acid-free backings.
What I loved most wasn’t the superheroes — it was the tension between light and dark.
The future in these stories was rarely neutral. It was either utopian and transcendent or dystopian and decayed. We were either evolving…or unraveling.
And the message that was formed in my 10-year old brain was this: who we become shapes the future that becomes possible. That the future is never fixed — it’s shaped by what we practice.
That idea stayed with me — through my work in strategy, foresight, and wellbeing. Because in real life, just like in storytelling: The future is not something out there. It’s something we practice into being — through our choices, our leadership, and how we show up for one another.
And that brings me to the name Futurkind™.
The Name is a Reminder
Culturally, we often talk about the future as something to fear: dystopian, inevitable, out of our control.
Some of you may even recognize the term Futurekind from Doctor Who, where it represented a cautionary vision of humanity losing its human-ness.
Although I didn’t choose the name because of that storyline—I chose it with awareness of it.
Because it serves as a reminder - and a reframe: There are always multiple futures available to us. One shaped by fear, scarcity, and disconnection. Another shaped by imagination, agency, and collective care.
Futurkind™ is about choosing — and cultivating — the latter.
It’s about reclaiming the future from inevitability and returning authorship to people, communities, and organizations.
Futurkind Is Not a Prediction. It’s a Practice.
Being future-savvy isn’t about forecasting what comes next.
It’s about learning to: sense early signals, imagine boldly, act from purpose rather than urgency, design strategies and systems that allow both people and the planet to thrive.
These aren’t abstract ideals — they’re daily choices.
Every conversation that expands possibility.
Every moment we pause instead of react.
Every time we choose alignment over numbness.
These micro-practices shape the macro-future.
The Heart of the Name
Futur — the future we move toward
Kind — the way we choose to move and who we create for
Kind as in profound compassion.
Kind as in kinship — belonging to one another.
And importantly, kind as in all future kinds across generations — human and more-than-human — because we share one living system.
The future isn’t just built with just strategy. It’s built with spirit.
So, I invite you to reflect on:
Who are you becoming?
What are you practicing?
And what story are your writing through today’s decisions?
A Movement, Not Just a Brand
Futurkind is a movement shaping futures worth living into — thoughtfully, courageously, together.
Not by reacting to the future. By reclaiming it.
Thank you for being here.
Whether you’ve been on this path with me for years or are just arriving, you are part of the story now.
